Monthly enlists experts and celebrities to teach 30-day online classes

You may know Max Deutsch from Month to Master , his yearlong self-improvement program where he tried to master one “expert-level” skill each month — such as solving a Rubik’s Cube in 20 seconds, holding a 30-minute conversation in a foreign language and even  challenging world champion Magnus Carlsen to a game of chess (Deustch lost). Now, Deustch and his co-founder Valentin Perez are launching Monthly , which Deustch told me is designed to “leverage technology to help scale this kind of learning to many more people.” Specifically, Monthly offers 30-day classes taught by experts and celebrities— the instructors often have hundreds of thousands or millions of YouTube subscribers. For example, Andrew Huang is teaching a class on music production, Daria Callie is teaching a class on realistic portrait painting and  Stevie Mackey is teaching a class on singing. When you enroll in a class, you’ll be assigned a different task every day; you might watch an instructional video one day,

DARPA aims to make networks 100 times speedier with FastNIC

Having a slow connection is always frustrating, but just imagine how supercomputers feel. All those cores doing all kinds of processing at lightning speed, but in the end they’re all waiting on an outdated network interface to stay in sync. DARPA doesn’t like it. So DARPA wants to change it — specifically by making a new network interface a hundred times faster. The problem is this. As DARPA estimates it, processors and memory on a computer or server can in a general sense work at a speed of roughly 10^14 bits per second — that’s comfortably into the terabit region — and networking hardware like switches and fiber are capable of about the same. “The true bottleneck for processor throughput is the network interface used to connect a machine to an external network, such as an Ethernet, therefore severely limiting a processor’s data ingest capability,” explained DARPA’s Jonathan Smith in a news post by the agency about the project . (Emphasis mine.) That network interface usually ta

An Indian SaaS startup, which is increasingly courting clients from outside of the country, just raised a significant amount of capital to expand its business. Hyderabad-based Darwinbox , which operates a cloud-based human resource management platform, said on Thursday it has raised $15 million in a new financing round. The Series B round — which moves the firm’s total raise to $19.7 million — was led by Sequoia India and saw participation from existing investors Lightspeed India Partners, Endiya Partners, and 3one4 Capital. More than 200 firms including giants such as adtech firm InMobi, fintech startup Paytm, drink conglomerate Bisleri, automobile maker Mahindra, Kotak group, and delivery firms Swiggy and Milkbasket use Darwinbox’s HR platform to serve half a million of their employees in 50 nations, Rohit Chennamaneni, cofounder of Darwinbox, told TechCrunch in an interview. Melvin Gordon to end holdout, report to Chargers

After reports earlier today suggested that Melvin Gordon may be ending his holdout and returning to the Chargers soon, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports that Gordon will indeed report to the team tomorrow.  Gordon will not play in the team’s matchup against Miami on Sunday, but he will presumably return to action the following week. Gordon needed to return before Week 10 in order to qualify for free agency next season, so he is reporting with plenty of time to spare. However, having missed three weeks of action, he will lose out on roughly $1M of his $5.6M 2019 salary, not to mention potential fines (which the team may opt to rescind). Statistically, Los Angeles’ rushing game has not suffered too much in Gordon’s absence, as Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson have 56 carries for 302 yards (good for 5.4 yards per carry) and two TDs. Ekeler is responsible for both of those scores, and he has also been a contributor in the passing game, adding two receiving touchdowns as well. However, the Ch

James is Man Utd’s shining light

He was Manchester United's wildcard buy. Just last week Ole Gunnar Solskjaer referred to the X-factor that he brought to the team. Harry Maguire had felt like a sure thing and Aaron Wan-Bissaka looked a safe bet to secure the right-back slot for years to come, but Daniel James? His signing was seen as a gamble. It is a gamble that is already paying off. Get Articles and ICO whitepapers written by Williams Alfred Onen
